Sports are supposed to be a way people can be one, a way people can put aside their differences and become a team. In this case, football matches aren’t being seen as such.
Women in France are challenging the ban on hijabs. The ban is not enforced as intended, but it’s still active.
In amateur leagues, Muslim women are unsure if they will always get the chance to play. The opportunity to play is up to the referees every game.
The ban can hurt women athletes’ dreams to play professionally due to them not being able to play.
The talks about the hijab bans are increasing the tension that France has against Islam. The strains can come from the January 15th attacks on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket.
The France Football Federation is enforcing the rule. The only problem with that is FIFA, and the French laws allow players to wear hijabs. The F.F.F debate, the ban was placed because it breaks religious neutrality on the field.
A french amateur football team, Les Hijabesues, believes they’re doing the right thing.
“It’s not just for us, it’s also for the young girls who tomorrow will be able to dream of playing for France, for P.S.G,” they said.
