This marathon would be Boston’s 126th, but their first time banning a group of people. The Boston Marathon is banning athletes from the two countries fighting against Ukraine.
The Boston Athletic Association stated that they would give a full refund or use credit for this race for another race to any Ukrainian runners who signed up.
According to the BAA website, the price for international residents is $225 and for U.S. residents is $205.
The BAA president Tom Grilk spoke on the decision.
“We believe that running is a global sport, and as such, we must do what we can to show our support to the people of Ukraine,” said Grilk.
The ban will still allow some Belarusian and Russian athletes to compete. Citizens of either country can still run if they aren’t residents of Russia or Belarus. Runners who are eligible to run can’t show Russian or Belarus flags.
Belarus has been public about its support of Russia and its goals. Belarus has helped by letting Russian soldiers come through their borders.
The Marathon ban is the latest ban from sports due to the high tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
